Emergency Vehicle Priority: Smart Traffic Lights System
Smart traffic lights employ specific mechanisms to prioritize the passage of emergency vehicles without the need for them to stop at intersections displaying red lights, thereby ensuring the safety of other road users.
A German research project known as SIRENE focuses on enhancing the efficiency of Emergency Vehicle Priority. In collaboration with the Transport and IT Foundation, experts explore an intelligent routing framework that adapts to real-time traffic alterations, especially in relation to truck routing. This framework caters to various modes of transportation. The primary focus is on the utilization of Car2X technology by emergency vehicles to signal the necessity of a clear passage. This system coordinates with traffic lights, minimizing disruptions on other roads, allowing the vehicle to navigate through the traffic smoothly.
According to the researchers, the use of PTV Saga simplifies and offers greater flexibility compared to conventional control technologies, eliminating the necessity to individually consider every traffic light. Within the research project, PTV experts demonstrated the functionality of the emergency vehicle priority system several times, highlighting its seamless operation.
